Royals by
Rachel Hawkins is a royally funny story that is also serious and sophisticated
all at the same time.
Plot Summary:
Daisy Winters is completely
overwhelmed. No, no, and no. She is everything, but royal. Daisy works at the
Sur-n-Save in Florida and is getting excited about going to Key West for a week
with her best friend Isabel. Eleanor (Ellie) Winters, Daisy’s older sister who
is a newly accepted member of the Scottish royal society, is engaged to sweet,
shy Prince Alexander James Lachlan Baird of Scotland. Daisy is blindsided by
the news of Ellie’s engagement. Of course, Daisy and her parents must visit Scotland
to meet Alex’s mother, the Queen of
Scotland, and Alex’s trouble-maker brother, Sebastian. Now that Alex and Ellie’s
engagement has been officially been announced to the public, Sebastian is the
most eligible bachelor in the world. Daisy finds herself in Scotland in under a
week leaving behind Isabel, the trip to Key West, and her summer. As soon as
she arrives, she is greeted with kilts and a blasting serenade of bagpipes. She
meets The Royal Wreckers first thing. The ringleader? Sebastian. Oh dear, he’s cute. As
Daisy tries to pull herself together she realizes that she is meeting one
handsome member of The Royal Wreckers after
another. Even if they do have very odd nicknames and drink an awful lot, they
sure are cute a charming. Daisy cannot resist sometimes, but to hang out with
them. Surprisingly, they are not as stuck up as she thought they would be.
Wait. Daisy has found the stuck up one. Miles, or Monsters as the boys call
him, can be charming, handsome, and helpful at times, but can also be seriously stuck up and harsh. Will Daisy survive her summer in Scotland? Will
the royal engagement last? Does Daisy fall for any of The Royal Wreckers?
Author Praise and Critique:
Rachel Hawkins does a wonderful
job describing royal life and the life of a teenager in this book. I loved how
the book could go from serious to funny at the drop of a hat. The relationships
in the book take different twists and turns than other somewhat romantic books
I have read in the past. The characters are well developed and are written with
lots of detail. The plot is enticing, funny, and easily followed. However, I
did not appreciate some of the politically controversial topics of today’s
world included in this fun-loving, lighthearted plot. These topics weighed the
plot down. Overall, Rachel Hawkins did a fantastic job writing this book.
Rating and Reasoning:
I give this book 4 stars
because of the hilarious, teenage, mistakes that are made by the characters and
the interesting and easily followed plot.
