Love and Other Train Wrecks

PLOT SUMMARY

Ammy’s (like the “ammy” in Sammy) family (whatever this word means: she’s not even sure) situation is complicated. Her father left a year ago to marry a much younger yoga instructor, leaving Ammy with her mother’s heightened anxiety. Ammy, a year later, takes the chance to reconnect with her dad by going to his “commitment ceremony” (yeah, with the yoga instructor), tuning-out her mother’s objections. She decides to travel by train from Virginia to New York. All is peaceful, not glamorous, but peaceful, until she hears an, “’Excuse me. Can I get in there?’” (Konen 8).

Noah’s got one thing on his mind: getting back with his ex-girlfriend, Rina. He’s going to New York on his winter break from college to win her back. The train is packed. He can tell frequent riders of AmTrak from amateurs. He spots a girl with a bag in the seat beside her. “’Excuse me. Can I get in there?’” She reluctantly moves the backpack, and the space is free. He slides in.

Ammy and Noah recognize things they hate about each other right off the bat. Both recognize things they love about each other as well. No, no. Noah is trying to get back with his ex, and Ammy’s just going for a chance at a normal (kinda) family life. They both lead separate lives. No connections can be drawn whatsoever, right? On the contrary or so they learn when the train breaks down, and they are sent on a true adventure.

RATING AND REASONING

While predictable and very similar to other YA romantic fiction novels, I enjoyed this book as one aspect of the story is truly unexpected. The love story is not cheesy. It is a truly sweet love story with an ending the will not disappoint.

Author Spotlight: Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Kimberly Brubaker Bradley At my school, I am a Library Leader. (Library Leaders promote reading in the middle school and recommend books for the younger grades.) The Library Leaders had the fortunate opportunity of eating lunch and meeting with Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. We got to ask her questions and just talk with her. Mrs. Bradley also spoke to the whole seventh and eighth grade in assembly about her research. 1)      When/How does she write? Mrs. Bradley writes in the morning, but this depends on her chores for the day. She got into her routine when her children, now graduating college and out of college, were small and went to school. She would always wait until her husband took them to drop them off at school. She likes for her writing space to be very quiet. She prefers typing when she when she writes as to writing. (This may be pretty common; I do not know what the common format among writers is today. I just thought I would include eve...

Reading and writing, reading and writing, reading and writing: that's what I hope to keep doing all summer (with some swimming and seeing friends mixed in there too!). Here's another review! This is Stuart Turton's The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle,  and it's a doozy.  SUMMARY THE RULES OF BLACKHEATH Evelyn Hardcastle will be murdered at 11:00 p.m. There are eight days and eight witnesses for you to inhabit.
